If you’re a fan of gyoza but worried about the lingering effects of garlic and chives, then Ginza’s Tenryu has a delightful surprise for you. Renowned for its unique take on the traditional Japanese dumpling, Tenryu offers a version that’s both flavourful and date-friendly, as it forgoes the use of garlic and chives.

Why I love Tenryu

Located in the bustling heart of Ginza, Tenryu’s gyoza stands out not just for its exquisite taste but also for its considerate ingredient choices. The absence of garlic and chives means you can enjoy these delectable dumplings without any worry about strong aftertastes.

Spicy & Sour Lettuce Fried Rice is also my go-to.

The gyoza at Tenryu are generously filled with a succulent mixture of finely chopped cabbage, juicy pork, and a medley of spices that create a perfect balance of flavours. Each bite is a testament to the craftsmanship and culinary tradition that Tenryu upholds.

A word of caution, though: these gyoza are notably large, almost the size of a banana! So be prepared for a hearty bite when you indulge in this delightful treat.

When to Visit Tenryu

If you’re planning a visit to Tenryu, it’s worth noting that the restaurant tends to get quite busy during peak meal times. Lunchtime, especially between 12:00 and 13:30, sees a significant crowd, with many office workers from nearby businesses flocking in for a hearty meal. Dinner hours, particularly around 18:00 to 20:00, can also be quite packed, especially on weekends. To avoid a long wait, it’s advisable to either arrive just before these peak times or opt for a slightly later visit.

Getting There

Tenryu is relatively easy to find, even amidst the bustling streets of Ginza. The restaurant is located near the Ginza-1chome Station, just a short walk from Exit 10. The building’s exterior is understated, so it’s best to keep an eye out for the simple signage that marks the entrance. If you’re navigating via smartphone, the location pins are usually accurate, so you shouldn’t have much trouble finding it. However, if you’re ever in doubt, asking a local or a shop attendant nearby will likely get you there without any hassle. Oh, by the way, “Hon Ten” refers to the main or original location. They also have other branches, such as in Ikebukuro. However, I find that the Ginza restaurant offers the best taste and overall experience!

So next time you find yourself in Ginza, make sure to stop by Tenryu and try their unique, garlic-free gyoza.
