Tucked away in Nishi-Umeda, there’s a hidden gem that deserves a spot on your Osaka itinerary: Zen-en. This traditional Japanese restaurant transports you back in time with its authentic atmosphere and exquisite cuisine. My recent lunch there was an unforgettable experience, one that truly stands out.
Why I love Zen-en
The moment you walk in, you’re greeted by an atmosphere that’s both serene and inviting, with a design that perfectly balances simplicity and elegance. It’s the kind of place where you immediately feel at ease, ready to savour a truly memorable meal.
One of the highlights of my visit was the restaurant’s signature dish, Tai-meshi. Tai-meshi is a classic Japanese dish featuring sea bream (tai) cooked with rice. The fish is either cooked whole with the rice or added in fillets, allowing the flavours to meld together beautifully. At Zen-en, the Tai-meshi was served in a beautifully crafted clay pot, keeping the rice warm and fragrant throughout the meal. The sea bream was tender, and the rice absorbed its delicate flavour, creating a dish that’s both simple and deeply satisfying. It’s a dish that embodies the essence of Japanese cuisine – subtle, delicate flavours that come together in perfect harmony, making it an absolute must-try.
However, we decided to try Tai-Chazuke Gozen (set) this time! At Zen-en, they serve sashimi-style sea bream (tai) with a rich sesame sauce. The Tai-Chazuke set even comes with a side of tempura!
Tai: sea bream
Chazuke: Tea (or Dashi) soaked rice
It’s not just the food that makes Zen-en special. The service is impeccable, with staff who are attentive without being intrusive, always ready with a smile. They take the time to explain each dish and its ingredients, adding a personal touch that makes you feel like a valued guest rather than just another customer. Even if you’re not familiar with Japanese cuisine, the staff are more than happy to guide you through the menu, ensuring that your dining experience is both enjoyable and educational.
Getting There
Located in the basement of the HERBIS PLAZA, at 2-5-25 Umeda, Kita-ku, Osaka, Zen-en can be a bit tricky to find. (We wandered around a bit trying to find the place!) The restaurant is tucked away on the B2F level, but once you make your way there, you’ll be rewarded with a dining experience that goes beyond just a meal. It’s a place where you can immerse yourself in Japanese culture, surrounded by traditional aesthetics, excellent food, and warm hospitality. Whether you’re a seasoned traveller or a first-time visitor to Japan, this is one dining experience in Osaka that you shouldn’t miss. So, if you’re looking for a spot that combines the best of Japanese cuisine with an authentic, welcoming atmosphere, make sure to put Zen-en at the top of your list. They have other two restaurants in Osaka, but the one in Nishiumeda has the style!
